7 things to do after you’ve hit ‘publish’

So you’ve spent time writing a blog post, but how do you make sure it then reaches the right audience? Below are a few simple suggestions to help you build your readership.

1.  Share it on social media

You’ve written it, now it’s time to share it with the world. Distribute your post on your social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook. Don’t forget to share it in relevant Google + and Linkedin groups too, the more active they are the better.

Give people a glimpse of the post’s content when you share it, so that they are intrigued enough to click through.

Use a tool like RiteTag to work out the best hashtags to use if this is something you’re unsure about.

You can take this a step further by promoting the social media post in which you share your blog, most channels let you do that very easily. Linkedin allows you to sponsor posts in a very targeted way for example, which is great if you're aiming your post at a particular sector.

2. Identify influencers

Using a tool like Buzzsumo, or your own personal knowledge, identify influencers that will be interested in your post and let them know about it. Drop them an email if you have it, or a tweet, drawing attention to your post and asking (very nicely!) if they might be interested in sharing it. Limit yourself to only one message or tweet per influencer, however, or you might appear very irritating to them!

3.  Build your newsletter

Email marketing is still one of the most powerful marketing tools there is. If you write posts regularly, then you already have content to share. I’ve written a beginner’s guide to creating a newsletter here.

If you use Passle, then you can use the in-built newsletter generator to send your most recent posts directly to your prospects.

4.  Automatization

Give your posts a longer lifespan by adding them to a scheduling tool such as Buffer to share them again later. Twitter, in particular, is so fast paced that you could keep sharing this post once every week, or every two weeks to really maximize its impact.

5.  Link it to your main website

How do people access your posts? If you don’t currently have a feed or easy link on your website’s landing page to your blog posts then you’re missing a trick.

6.  Recycle it

So you’ve written a blog post, but what would it look like as an infographic, or a podcast, or a video? Translating your writing into different media is another way to ensure its longevity. I recommend Piktochart for creating infographics.

7.  Update and republish it

Depending on how topical and time-sensitive a post is, you can continue to make it relevant. A few months after you’ve written your post, why not revisit it, update it, and republish it?
