PMF26 |Relationships that impact confidence, Meirion Jones

How do the relationships we build influence our confidence, and ultimately, our effectiveness at work?

This was the central question explored by Meirion Jones of Tongue in Trees, in a thought-provoking session on the connection between relationships, self-worth and professional confidence. Confidence doesn't develop in isolation. It's shaped by the relationships we experience every day.

Positive, supportive relationships create a virtuous cycle. They strengthen self-belief, encourage openness and give us the confidence to challenge assumptions, share ideas and take initiative. Conversely, critical or undermining relationships can create negative feedback loops, leaving people reluctant to speak up, challenge partners or express what they need.

For MBD professionals, who regularly navigate competing priorities, demanding stakeholders and complex internal relationships, this distinction matters.

So how can we build relationships that strengthen confidence rather than undermine it? Meirion highlighted three important behaviours:

  • Manage conflict constructively. Look beyond opposing positions to understand the underlying concerns driving someone's behaviour.
  • Express needs clearly. Be honest about what you're experiencing, distinguish facts from perceptions and articulate what you want to achieve.
  • Build trust through curiosity. Ask open questions, listen actively and work towards shared solutions rather than becoming defensive.

The takeaway?

Confidence isn't simply something we bring to relationships. It's something our relationships help create.

For MBD teams looking to become more influential strategic advisers, investing in stronger, more open relationships isn't just good people management. It's fundamental to building the confidence to lead, challenge and make a meaningful impact.

Confidence isn't simply something we bring to relationships. It's something our relationships help create.
