PROFESSIONAL SERVICES BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING INSIGHTS

What's your disguise? What we can learn about personal brand from the CIA.

I love hearing real experts talk. Everything they say is enlightening or novel in some way.

This video is a great example of that as it got me thinking about personal brand and what "disguises" we each wear digitally depending on the occasion.

We tend to wear one 'mask' for our friends, one for our family and another again for our professional lives.

What struck me was that a few simple tweaks completely changed the way someone was perceived and reacted to; the difference between an unnoticeable stranger and someone who stands out.

It is exactly the same with our digital personal brand. There are a few simple additions to our 'mask' that that take us from an unrecognised person and create a thought leader:

  • A well constructed social media presence
  • Regular commentary on their industry
  • Engaging in discussions about wider market event

Former Chief of Disguise for the CIA, Jonna Mendez, explains how disguises are used in the CIA, and what aspects to the deception make for an effective disguise.
