Time to Talk Day - Thursday February 4th

Thursday February 4th is Time to Talk Day - started by the mental health charity Time to Change, the purpose behind this is to get the nation talking about mental health, with the aim of removing the stigma and discrimination surrounding it.

It's worth noting that for someone that isn't able, or isn't ready to talk and open up, inviting them to talk can put pressure, or make them feel feelings of shame or failure that they are not talking. For those struggling with low self-worth, it's another thing they have failed to do. Forcing someone to talk frequently won't work, and will often leave both parties confused and frustrated. The meaning of 'time to talk' looks different for everyone, depending on who they are, and where they are on the wide spectrum of mental health. It's critical to remember this when talking about mental health.

Rather than putting the emphasis on you (or someone else) having to talk to someone, consider practising checking in with yourself, and self reflection. Some different ways of helping yourself and others are journaling (writing down your thoughts on a regular basis), online chat forums, talking therapies on the phone, therapy, counselling and talking with a friend or family member. Sometimes, taking a walk with someone outside and giving them space to 'be' whilst you are present with them without saying anything can be just as helpful as talking with them. Listening to someone doesn't always have to involve words.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, and mental health is a constantly moving spectrum for everyone. We are all each other's keepers and listening to what people say and don't say is so important.
