Good news stories- Week 3

Week 3 of my round-up of the good news stories that are circulating in the world's media and it is getting easier and easier to find them.  One of the greatest good news stories for anyone reading this with children is the fact that we all made it through the first week of working from home with them!  This whole situation that we find ourselves in, does bring new meaning to the 'Sunday Fear' knowing that the job role is widened to include homeschooling and lesson planning.  I have thought about self-isolating in the shed a few times but I don't think my wife will buy it.  

On with the stories....

Australian Astrophysicist gets magnets stuck up his nose whilst trying to invent coronavirus device- Daniel Reardon managed to get not one, but four magnets stuck up his nose when attempting to build a Coronavirus necklace that aimed to warn people to stop touching their faces.  I am sure the doctors weren't angry at all.  Full article here

Aldi to pay 'amazing' staff 10% bonus for their hard work during the pandemic- To reward Aldi employees, the supermarket has decided to pay additional wages and backdate it to the 9th of march.  Tesco's have followed suit as a result.  Full article here

Abbey Road zebra crossing repainted during lockdown- The famous zebra crossing that appeared on the front cover of the 1969 Beatles album, was given a new lease of life as the highways maintenance team took advantage of quiet roads and streets.  Full article here

Decathlon transforms snorkelling masks into ventilators for patients in Italy- The french retailer has been working alongside a Rome based research institute to redesign the masks and produce them using 3D printing technology.  The mask can now be connected to a ventilator and has been successfully used in hospitals.  Full article here

NHS Nightingale work available for Virgin & Easy jet staff- Furloughed staff from the two airlines have been offered work to support the doctors and nurses by carrying out non-clinical tasks like changing the beds.  Full article here

Mercedes F1 to make breathing aid- The breathing aid is to help patients out of intensive care and has been created in less than a week.  40 devices have been made and if successful another 1,000 will be produced.  Full article here

Certain industries are booming- Bike shops, exercise gear, indoor and outdoor games, home and garden items, reading matter, electrical goods and coffee subscriptions.  With a slight change in the business model, companies are seeing brilliant sales.  Full article here

750,000 people sign up to join the NHS volunteer army- In less than a week, three-quarters of a million people have signed up to join the cause.  Full article here

A service dog in training brings comfort to ER doctors on the front line- A one-year-old yellow labrador called Wynn has been bringing joy, comfort and cuddles to frontline staff at a hospital in Denver.  She is being trained by an emergency physician who works there.  Full article here
